The Walls are built (August 2000)

Just behind where Mr Ed takes a short break in the photo above is the first
wall erected
on this level-- the front entry.
The walls were built up laying on their side on the deck and then tilted into
place.
This allows the siding to be easily applied (glued and nailed). The
openings for
windows and doors will be cut out later.

The photos above show all the walls except those surrounding the garage in
place.
The four trusses for the extension of the main house roof are temporarily
positioned
atop the walls near where they will ultimately be placed. It was much
easier to put
the trusses in position at this point, as the walls of the future garage would
have
blocked the easiest route to get them into position.
You cannot tell in this photo, but the rim joists surrounding the garage area
are
all using treated 2 x 10's. This is due to the fact that the eventual
garage floor
slab will come up to a level about half way up those boards. All wood in
contact
with concrete needs to be exterior, treated wood.

The view from ground level outside the southern parts of the addition is now
taking shape.
The ladder is leaning on what would eventually be the doorway to the deck from
the bedroom.
As you can see from the right photo, that furnace room doorway is in a great
position for
unloading supplies from the van. The parking spot outside the door is very
convenient.

The roofing system starts to go in.
The top photo shows the view of the garage looking north from the bedroom.
The lower left photo is from about the same spot but looking up. I
built a walkway
atop 2 x 6's that are atop the 2 x 8 ceiling joists to make rafter installation
safe and
convenient. The walkway will remain (between the 2x6 and 2x8's it'll be
just above
the insulation when completed) through completion. Entry doors in the
front and back
of the gable ends will allow me access, and a place where I can store long
slender
items.
The photo on the lower right is taken from what was the main entry to the
house
looking toward the area above the new bedroom. This area will eventually
be
approximately the point where the extension of the house roofline meets
the
roofline for the garage/bedroom.

Mister Ed welcomes you to his new bedroom!
