September '97 construction photos....

What a surprise! One day amidst the plumbing work my friend Mike Conway rode in on his bicycle! All the way from Erie PA! We christened the deck that afternoon in honor of his brief visit back to the northwoods.

Here I am sweating a couple of plumbing fittings in the basement.

Here I am sitting in Bills "whiz bang" machine looking like I'm doing something important. I'd be REALLY dangerous if I had one of these!

This is the view of the trench Bill dug for our water supply pipe, as seen from the well end (notice the hydrant/hose in the foreground).

This is the view of the water supply trench as seen from the house side.

Bill Byrnes at the helm of the ultimate trencher. He was having his way with the soil.

From the side doorway looking down you get to see where the water pipe enters the house and the nice 90 degree fitting in the line.

That trench for the water supply was mighty large. 4-5 feet deep. Here I am before backfilling but after it was pressurized and there were no leaks.

This is the view of the trench I had to dig to connect the telephone line (and my Ethernet computer LAN) from the shed to the house. That's the well in the foreground.

What can I say... hanging drywall is FUN, 'cept for all the screws and glue work. Here I am in the living room closing up the wall by the cellar stairs.

Nobody stands taller than when they stop by to help with the drywall mudding with their stilts and banjo.

Bill Byrnes loading his banjo as he prepares to embed the drywall tape into the joints with the first layer of mud.

Here is the bathroom quite a bit from completion. Water resistant drywall throughout.

Here is the kitchen area just before the drywall painting work begins.

The living room view before the paint.

This is the cellar stairwell showing how I built a temporary floor atop the stairs so that we could do the drywall work without too much hassle.

The view east down the hallway.

The dining area and side door.

This is the master bedroom looking southeast.

This is dads bedroom looking southeast towards the door (closet on right).

Ahhh, the kitchen view just after the vinyl flooring was put down.

Here is a shot of the ductwork for the range hood. The house is insulated well and "tight" and ducting the range outside is the only good way to get the cooking smells from lingering all winter.

Here is one view of the bathroom nearly complete.

Here is another view of the bathroom near completion.

The master bedroom with a roll of carpet and padding along the wall. Note the nice ceiling light/fan, they should make the difference in the bedrooms on the one or two sweltery summer nights per year.

With the drywall and trim installed the living room southeast corner sure has taken on a finished appearance. Note the wall mounted electric heater.

Similarly, the kitchen/dinette area just needs some more trim along the floor.

The kitchen (nearly complete) sure takes on the appearance of the "artists rendition" that was put on here a few months ago. As you can see, we did get the water and ice on the refrigerator door, but decided to forego the front mounted controlls on the oven. Look closely and you can see the 5 gallon "drywall mud" bucket in the sink-- with inches to spare under the faucet spout!

The kitchen cabinets arrived all disassembled in a whole bunch of cardboard boxes.

This view shows the cabinets and the counter top near their future locations all ready to be installed. As you can see, I didn't paint behind them!

Boxes boxes boxes!

The living room on the day the carpet is to be installed. You can see the underlayment in place and the backside of the carpet is that white piece.

Here I am stretching the living room carpet into position.

I bet you can't see the nice seam we made that runs just to the left of me in this photo. I am glad it didn't loosen as I stretched the carpet and put tension on that fresh seam.

A rented carpet "power stretcher" is quite the tool! The living room floor is nearly done here. The carpet color is "23A". Ask your local sand/gravel pit owner and he'll show you some "23A" so you can see the color in real life. Put another way, dirt picked up from the driveway (when dried) is a perfect match for the carpet. Looks great and functional.

This view shows the house with the side stoop attached and ready to move in.

YES! We actually have a view of the DirecTV DSS satellite! Civilization (well, in a rather liberal sense) comes to the north woods.

Continue to view the new addition to the house starting with the Foundation Footings construction in 2000.
